Invitation: ‘Greek Revolution of 1821’ events at the University of Edinburgh this autumn

The School of History, Classics and Archaeology is delighted to announce two public events this autumn which commemorate the Greek Revolution of 1821 and explore its Scottish connections. Both events mark the tenure of the 12th A. G. Leventis Visiting Professor of Greek in the University of Edinburgh, Professor Roderick Beaton FBA.

Exhibition ‘Edina/Athena – The Greek Revolution & the Athens of the North – 1821/2021’, 29 October 2021–29 January 2022
Venue: Exhibition gallery, University Library (ground floor), 30 George Square, Edinburgh EH8 9LJ
Opening times: Mondays to Saturdays, 9.00–16.00. Last admission at 15.15.
Free admission.  Please note that the capacity of the gallery is limited to 25 people at any one time.  Masks to be worn.

Two hundred years ago, at a time when Edinburgh was popularly called ‘The Athens of the North’, Greece rose in revolution against the Ottoman Empire. These two contexts, at first glance quite distinct, were connected by visions of an idealised classical past and by international networks of support for Greek independence. The exhibition ‘Edina/Athena’, generously funded by the A. G. Leventis Foundation as part of Initiative 1821–2021, sets these stories side-by-side for the first time.

In addition to showcasing Edinburgh-based collections (National Library of Scotland, National Galleries of Scotland, University of Edinburgh) the exhibition features loans from the Royal Collection Trust; the Benaki Museum of Greek Culture, Athens; the British School at Athens; the Bodleian Library, Oxford; and the University of Aberdeen.
